About

25+ years redefining what's possible on set

Mam Smith is a multi-disciplinary entertainment industry professional with over 25 years of on-set experience. A director, intimacy coordinator, stuntwoman, aerialist, choreographer, dancer, and actress — she is a true multi-hyphenate whose career naturally spans three interconnected phases: performance, stunts, and intimacy coordination, with directing emerging as a fourth pillar.

Fully accredited in Intimacy Coordination by Intimacy On Set, she has emerged as one of the entertainment industry's most respected authorities in intimacy coordination. With a reputation for precision, empathy, and innovation, Mam is the trusted expert behind some of today's most high-profile and nuanced screen content.

She has performed in over 90 different TV/film productions and over 1,000 live performances nationally and internationally, including Broadway and Cirque du Soleil. Her influence spans major studios and platforms including HBO, Netflix, Apple, Universal Pictures, MGM, Paramount+, Hulu, and many more.

“Being a stunt coordinator is the closest position in attitude and approach to being an intimacy coordinator — both require executing the director's vision in scenes that need unique preparation, cross-department coordination, and the ability to work with actors in challenging situations.”

In 2018, while training in directing at the Irish Film Institute, she was introduced to intimacy directing by Ita O'Brien. After returning to the USA, HBO — which had just mandated having an intimacy coordinator on all productions — contacted her to train with Alicia Rodis. She became one of the first people in the world to take on the intimacy coordinator role, a position born directly from the #MeToo movement.

Philosophy

Approach & Values

Mam views intimacy coordination as fundamentally an educational position. She establishes a safe space for open communication and transparency, follows SAG-AFTRA requirements for legal documentation, and sets up closed-set safety guidelines with the production team.

She speaks to performers before, during, and after intimate scenes, ensuring there are no surprises — discussing lighting, blocking, and choreography in detail. Whether working on raw drama or stylized thrillers, she navigates sensitive material with discretion and artistry, elevating performances while protecting the integrity and boundaries of performers.
